Staying Curious

Exploring Emotions Underlying Behaviors

Step 2: Tune In To Your Teen's Call

  • After checking in with your own emotions, you’re back in the cockpit.
  • Now, it’s time to shift focus to your child. Instead of reacting to what they’re doing on the surface, ask yourself:
    • “What might be underneath this behavior?”
    • Is it fear? Shame? A need for control? Past hurt showing up in the present?
  • This step is about decoding the why behind their actions—so that in Step 3, you can choose a response that connects, rather than escalates.
